Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Thursday And Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 86 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County for Thursday and Friday. The Health Unit was closed Thursday and did not report any case information.

New & Total Cases

Of the 86 new cases: 43 cases were reported on Thursday September 30th and 43 cases were reported on Friday October 1st.

The Health Unit says 34 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 25 cases are community acquired, 10 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 17 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,656 on Wednesday September 29th to 19,742 on Friday October 1st.

They say 297 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 16 since Wednesday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 4,321 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 62 since Wedesday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 2,315 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 60 since Wednesday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 315,794 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+751 since Wednesday)
    • 22,631 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-550 since Wednesday) *
    • 293,163 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,301 since Wednesday)
    • 3,815 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+71 since Wednesday)
  • A total of 612,772 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,123 since Wednesday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 72.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since Wednesday)
    • 83.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Wednesday)
  • 66.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since Wednesday)
    • 77.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since Wednesday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 18,989 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 68 resolved cases since Wednesday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced two additional deaths from COVID-19 bringing the local death toll to 456. They say a man in his 50s from the community and a woman in her 60s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 22 hospitalizations today: 16 people in acute care (decrease of 13), and 6 people in the ICU (decrease of 2) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
