Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 39 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 18 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 12 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,319 on Monday September 20th to 19,358 on Tuesday September 21st.

They say 333 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 33 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 3,957 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (decrease of 1 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 1,961 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 5 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 311,317 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+380 since yesterday)
    • 25,390 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-217 since yesterday) *
    • 285,927 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+597 since yesterday)
  • A total of 600,369 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+4,102 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 71.07 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.08 per cent since yesterday)
    • 82.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 65.27 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.13 per cent since yesterday)
    • 75.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 18,575 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 70 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced two additional deaths from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 450. They say a man in his 50s from the community and a woman in her 80s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 20 hospitalizations today: 15 people in acute care (increase of 4), and 5 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
