The Patterson Park Black history murals in Sandwich Towne have been temporarily removed for restoration work.
The city says that the removal of the murals was initiated after recent vandalism as well as inconsistencies discovered in the information on the panels, including some inaccurate dates and spellings of names.
The artist who was involved with the murals that were originally displayed on a former Sandwich Towne grocery store will carry out the restoration work. Improvements will include an application of anti-graffiti coating to prevent further damage. The murals are anticipated to be re-installed by mid-September 2021.
Notification of the restoration has been posted at the Patterson Park location to inform passersby in the interim.
