Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 129 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit no longer reports case counts and statistics on weekends and now provides a weekend summary on Mondays.
New & Total Cases
Of the 129 new cases, 39 cases were reported on August 14th, 54 cases were reported on August 15th, and 36 cases on August 16th.
The Health Unit says 41 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 28 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 17 cases are still under investigation.
Total overall cases increased from 17,151 on Friday August 13th to 17,280 on Monday August 16th.
They say 260 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 67).
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 2,212 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 58).
Variant case strains:
- 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
- 214 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 58)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.
They say 92 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 11).
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 293,717 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+898 since Friday)
- 29,301 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-952 since Friday) *
- 264,416 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,850 since Friday)
- A total of 558,133 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,748 since Friday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 67.05 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 77.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 60.36 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
- 69.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated
Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,583 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 62 resolved cases since Friday.
Deaths
There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 437.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 6 hospitalizations today: 5 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 1 person in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
