48 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 48 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 3 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 44 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,695 on Tuesday August 24th to 17,743 on Wednesday August 25th.

They say 408 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 20).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,548 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 29).

Variant case strains:

• 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
• 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
• 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
• 541 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 26)
• 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 297,962 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+408 since yesterday)
  • 27,512 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-169 since yesterday) *
  • 270,450 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+577 since yesterday)
• A total of 568,412 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+979 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

• 68.02 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 78.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
• 61.74 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
  • 71.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated
