21 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 21 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 6 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 14 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,035 on Monday August 9th to 17,056 on Tuesday August 10th.

They say 145 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 5).

The Health Unit does not provide a breakdown of whether cases are in people who are vaccinated or not, however Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health said Friday that approximately 75 to 80 per cent of local cases are in people who are unvaccinated.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,080 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 1).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,832 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 83 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 46 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 6).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 291,439 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+404 since yesterday)
    • 31,458 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-506 since yesterday) *
    • 259,981 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+910 since yesterday)
  • A total of 551,420 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,314 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 66.53 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 59.35 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 68.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,475 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 16 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 436.

The Health Unit lists 2 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care, and 0 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
