Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 7 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from the weekend, bringing the local total to 16,845. The Health Unit no longer reports case counts and statistics on weekends and now provides a weekend summary on Mondays.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,838 on Friday July 9th to 16,845 on Monday July 12th, and 23 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 1 case was reported from July 10th, 2 cases were reported from July 11th, and 4 cases were reported on July 12th.

They say 5 cases are community acquired, 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, and 1 case is still under investigation.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,986 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 3).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,815 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 8 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 1)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1) (increase of 1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 6 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 278,848 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+1,537 since Friday)
    • 71,027 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-9,066 since Friday) *
    • 207,821 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+10,603 since Friday)
  • A total of 486,669 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+12,140 since Friday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 63.66 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 75.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 47.44 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 58.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,386 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 9 resolved case since Friday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 bringing the local death toll to 436. They say a woman in her 70’s from long-term care passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 4 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care, and 2 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
