The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 3 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.
New & Total Cases
The Health Unit says three new cases are reported for Thursday but due to a data cleanup, the net change to the overall local total is zero due to three cases being removed from their system. Their method for reducing the overall local total due to data cleanups involves reducing the current day’s recorded new case count, even if there are new cases.
Due to the data cleanup, total overall cases remained at 16,851 between Wednesday July 21st and Thursday July 22nd, and 14 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
Of the 3 new cases, 1 case is travel related, 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, and 1 case is still under investigation.
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 1,991 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.
Variant case strains:
- 1,818 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
- 10 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.
They say 2 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
