A state of emergency has been declared after a gas leak was discovered in downtown Wheatley Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency personnel remain on scene in the vicinity of 16 Erie Street North where the presence of Hydrogen Sulphide has been detected.

Electric service has been shut off for 20 customers in the area including 13 residential dwellings. Sixteen residents have been evacuated.

Investigators have not determined the origin of the leak but confirmed it is not related to any natural gas service provided by Enbridge.

Officials say that the level of gas detected presents a significant safety risk and emergency personnel have established a perimeter around the area.

The Provincial Ministry of Environment was also on scene and the Ministry of Natural Resources has been informed.

Windsor Hazmat team attended Wednesday evening to assist.

The public is being asked to avoid the area.
