9 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 9 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday, bringing the local total to 16,751.
New Cases
Cases increased from 16,742 on Tuesday June 15th to 16,751 on Wednesday June 16th and 89 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
The Health Unit says 6 cases are community acquired, and 3 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases.
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 1,919 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 1 today).
Variant case totals:
- 1,763 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1 today)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
- 12 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
- 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
- 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.
They say 28 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 266,287 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+612 since yesterday)
- 177,625 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-5,966 since yesterday) *
- 88,662 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+6,578 since yesterday)
- A total of 354,949 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+7,190 since yesterday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 60.79 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 72.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 20.24 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
- 25.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated
Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

- People 70 years of age and older.
- Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before April 18th, 2021

Resolved Cases
The Health Unit lists 16,229 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 13 resolved cases since yesterday.
Deaths
There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 433.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 10 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 7 people in acute care (decrease of 4), and 3 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
