5 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 5 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday, bringing the local total to 16,795.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,790 on Thursday June 24th to 16,795 on Friday June 25th and 56 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 1 case is community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 3 cases are still being investigated by their contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,948 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case totals:

  • 1,796 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 15 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 12 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 271,047 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+253 since yesterday)
    • 138,748 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-5,130 since yesterday) *
    • 132,299 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5,383 since yesterday)
  • A total of 403,306 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+5,596 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 61.88 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 73.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 30.20 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 38.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated

Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics:

      • People 70 years of age and older.
      • Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before May 9th, 2021
      • Starting Saturday at 8:00am: Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before June 2nd, 2021

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,305 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 4 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 434.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 7 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care, and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
