The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 10 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday (a net increase of 0 cases to the total due to a data cleanup).

New Cases

The Health Unit says 10 new cases are reported on Thursday but the net increase to the total is 0 cases due to a data cleanup. Their method for reducing the total due to data cleanups involves reducing the current day’s recorded new case count. Therefore the Health Unit removed 10 cases from their system’s total during the data cleanup and that’s represented in the new cases number Thursday.

Of the 10 new cases, the Health Unit says 2 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 2 cases are community acquired, 1 case is travel related outside of North America, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

The case total remained the same at 16,790 due to the data cleanup and 55 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,948 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 4 today).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,796 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 15 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 15 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.
