28 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 28 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday, bringing the local total to 15,596.

New Cases

Cases increased from 15,568 on Monday May 3rd to 15,596 on Tuesday May 4th and 386 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 11 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 4 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 13 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 974 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 40 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

• 886 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 38 identified since yesterday)
• 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351)
• 3 of the total variant cases to date have been the Brazilian Variant (P.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 157,979 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,191 since yesterday)
  • 144,034 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,125 since yesterday)
  • 13,945 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+66 since yesterday)
• A total of 171,924 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,257 since yesterday)

Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says 1,104 people were vaccinated at the two pop-up clinics on Monday. She says 702 people received a vaccine at the St. Angela Merici church hall and 402 people received a vaccine at Mackenzie Hall. Eighty per cent of people vaccinated at the pop-ups were between the ages of 20 and 39.

The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 36.06 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

How To Get A Vaccine

There are two vaccination programs at this time:

• Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
  • Those eligible include:
    • Adults aged 50 and older in 2021 living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
    • Adults aged 18 and older in 2021 living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
    • Pregnant individuals
    • People with the “highest risk”, and “high risk” health conditions
    • Adults aged 40 and older in 2021 with “at risk” health conditions
    • Healthcare workers in the “highest priority”, “very high priority” or “high priority” groups
    • Licenced childcare workers

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 14,796 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 69 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 414.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 14 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 9 people in acute care (decrease of 8), and 5 people in the ICU (increase of 2) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
