25 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Monday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 25 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Monday, bringing the local total to 16,558.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,533 on on Sunday May 30th to 16,558 on Monday May 31st and 223 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 7 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 12 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,792 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 27 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,661 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 31 identified since yesterday)
  • 5 of the total variant cases to date have been the Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the Indian Variant (B.1.617) (increase of 1 identified since yesterday)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 134 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 245,782 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+4,261 since yesterday)
    • 218,572 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+2,952 since yesterday)
    • 27,210 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,309 since yesterday)
  • A total of 272,992 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+5,570 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 70.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 56.11 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 6.21 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are completely vaccinated

The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Getting A Vaccine (1st Dose)

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • Essential workers who cannot work from home that are 16 years and older, born in 2005 or earlier.

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 80 years of age and older.

    • People can now receive their second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 15,909 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 34 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 426.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 15 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 11 people in acute care, and 4  people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
