The University of Windsor will be going smoke-free this fall.
According to a report released by the Canadian Cancer Society (2020), over 95 Canadian universities and colleges have become 100% smoke-free.
The University says that the process of becoming a smoke-free campus provides them with an opportunity to enhance awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use, cannabis use and vaping, and connect the campus community to resources. Being a smoke-free campus can make it easier for individuals to resist and/or quit smoking.
They say that supports will be available to individuals who may wish to quit smoking and those who may need help to cope with the change. There will be some exceptions to the Smoke-Free Campus policy, including burning of the traditional and sacred medicines that are part of Indigenous cultural and spiritual practices.
