54 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Monday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 54 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Monday, bringing the local total to 15,245.

New Cases

Cases increased from 15,191 on Sunday April 25th to 15,245 on Monday April 26th and 482 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 15 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 8 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 29 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.

The Health Unit says 786 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 21 identified since yesterday). They say 708 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7), and 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 138,370 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+229 since yesterday)
  • 124,786 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+224 since yesterday)
  • 13,584 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5 since yesterday)
• A total of 151,954 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+234 since yesterday)

The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 31.59 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says the allocation of Pfizer vaccine will double for Windsor-Essex for a two week period starting in early May.

How To Get A Vaccine

There are two vaccination programs at this time:

• Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
  • Those eligible include:
    • Adults aged 50 and older living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
    • Adults aged 60 and older living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
    • Healthcare workers in the highest priority, very high priority or high priority groups
    • People with the highest risk, and high risk health conditions
    • Pregnant individuals

  • Or you can call 226-773-2200 (but the Health Unit says the call centre is only for assisting people who can’t use the website and the call centre has the same access to appointments as what’s shown on the website)

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 14,350 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 54 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 413.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 16 hospitalizations today: 12 people in acute care (increase of 2 today), and 4 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

  • 16 patients are from Windsor-Essex
  • 10 patients have been transferred in from other regions

• 1 outbreak at a manufacturing workplace in Tecumseh (positive for the U.K. Variant B.1.1.7)
• 1 outbreak at a repair and maintenance workplace in Windsor
• 1 outbreak at a retail workplace in Windsor
