The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 201 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday, bringing the local total to 9,246.

Cases increased from 9,045 on Thursday January 7th to 9,246 on Friday January 8th and 2,490 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 51 cases are outbreak-related, 6 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is community acquired, and 143 cases are still being investigated.

They say 6,554 people locally have recovered (an increase of 211 recoveries).

Deaths

There have been twelve new deaths from COVID-19 as of Friday bringing the local death toll to 202.

The Health Unit says:

• 10 deaths were from long-term care and retirement homes
  • 1 woman in her 50s
  • 1 man in his 60s
  • 2 women and 1 man in their 70s
  • 3 men and 1 woman in their 80s
  • 1 woman in her 90s
• 2 deaths were from the community
  • A man in his 80s
  • A man in his 90s

Hospitalizations

On Friday, the Health Unit lists 93 hospitalizations: 78 people in acute care (7 more today), and 15 people in the ICU (1 less today) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

• Extendicare Tecumseh (Tecumseh) has 75 resident cases and 38 staff cases (2 new resident cases, 4 new staff cases)

• The Village at St. Clair (Windsor) has 150 resident cases and 105 staff cases (3 new resident cases)
