Roll Out Of The Moderna Vaccine

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says Windsor Essex will be receiving doses of the Moderna vaccine given the region’s status as a high-priority area.

He says the vaccine will be administered to residents at long-term care and retirement homes with a “risk-based approach” that starts with facilities not in outbreak, facilities with contained outbreaks, and then the remainder of facilities.

“With the roll out of the Moderna vaccine, we can take it directly to the homes, it will help us to protect the most vulnerable in the population,” he said.

Dr. Ahmed says the Health Unit — which has its own freezers for storage — is expected to receive the Moderna vaccine today and the first vaccinations will begin Monday.

“We may receive enough to vaccinate at least half of the population that are currently residents of all the Windsor long-term care and retirement homes,” he said. “I can not confirm at this time the exact number that will come to us [during the first shipment].”

Theresa Marentette, Health Unit CEO says the Health Unit’s nursing staff will travel to and administer the vaccine at the long-term care and retirment homes and residents at eight homes will receive their first doses next week. She says the Health Unit’s goal is to vaccinate two homes per day.

Marentette says the Health Unit is working with the homes to obtain consent from residents and that receiving the vaccine is completely voluntary.

She says the Moderna vaccine requires a second dose after twenty-eight days.
