Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald is calling on farm operators to encourage testing of workers for COVID-19
“I join the Premier and my local community leaders in strongly urging the farm operators to take responsibility and encourage testing for all of their employees,” the mayor said in a statement. “This is absolutely necessary for the health and safety of the agri-food workers and the community.”
MacDonald says she is concerned about the negative economic impacts from the sacrifices made during the pandemic. “Over the course of this pandemic, there have been many sacrifices,” she said. “We know businesses have been kept from reopening, and there is animosity surfacing because of the negative economic impacts being felt by the people of Windsor-Essex.”
“I ask that Leamington residents continue to be patient and respect the Premier’s cautious, regional approach to reopening,” she said. “We strongly encourage the farm operations to work diligently to help control the spread of COVID-19, so the rest of the region can move to Stage 2 in the province’s reopening plan.”
“Our efforts have resulted in the province initiating proactive on-site targeted testing for agri-food workers in Windsor-Essex that began this past Saturday,” MacDonald said. “While this is what we have been working towards, this approach will only be successful with the full support and cooperation of the farm owners.”
