Firefighters have extinguished a blaze at an apartment and office building in Downtown Windsor.

Crews were called around 7:15am to Westcourt Place at Goyeau and University and found heavy smoke pouring from the underground parking garage door.

The building had lost power, and firefighters cut a hole in the parking garage door to gain access.

Crews located the cause of the blaze – a car on fire in the underground parking garage.

Residents reported smoke travelled as high as the 21st floor.

Paramedics transported three residents to hospital for smoke inhalation. One person was rescued from an elevator. Two firefighters were also treated for smoke inhalation.

Windsor Police say anyone seeking access to the nearby municipal parking garage can gain access from Chatham Street at Ouellette Avenue.

Fire personnel advised residents to shelter in place. A number of residents evacuated.

St. Alphonsus Church at 85 Park Street East is accepting anyone who has been displace by the fire and Windsor Fire has established a Transit Windsor bus as a shelter for residents.

Windsor Fire says residents looking for information are asked to go to 400 City Hall Square – Lunch Room for an Emergency Reception Centre.

The fire was declared out shortly after 11:00am.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate due to the complex nature of the fire.
