Danica

Breed: Hound Mix
DOB: November 1, 2013
Weight: 58.9 lbs
Sex: Female
Energy Level: medium energy
Adoption Fee: $375.00

Requirements:
-fully secured fenced yard (no electric fence)
-no apartments
-no children under 7 years old in the home
-another medium-sized calm dog in the home

Pup-sonality:
Danica has come a long way from the scared, timid, quiet girl she was, waiting in a shelter for a year for someone to rescue her. She now enjoys to play with her foster sibling and enjoys laying in the cool grass under the big tree in her foster family’s yard, taking in all the sights and sounds of the world around her. As a hound mix, she will follow her nose whether it leads to your kitchen counter or an open door/gate. Her furever family will need to be diligent about keeping doors/gates secure. She keeps the yard free of squirrels and will do her hound howl if she hears any noise she feels that you should be aware of (she does not like a lawnmower or a vacuum). She is not a fan of this extreme heat so once shes had enough of the heat she enjoys relaxing in comfort of a cool house on the couch.

Danica’s favourite thing to do is snuggle on the couch with you when you are relaxing. Her next favourite thing is to sneak into bed with you and snuggle up to your back. She is house-trained and crate-trained, and will sleep in her crate overnight. She hasn’t been around children very much but has been good with children she meets on her walks, she walks very well on a leash. Danica loves other dogs and cats, but can be intimidated by larger dogs (but if they are gentle and respectful, she will warm up to them). She enjoys bone marrow treats and deer antlers; she loves stuffies and plush balls if you tell her to be gentle and not chew them. This girl has been through so much in her life and she truly deserves the opportunity to be treated like a queen. Her beautiful, brown, soulful eyes tell of a life that wasn’t so good before now, and all she wants is a family who can love and treat her with kindness and give her the best of the best. If your family is prepared to love and care for Queen Danica, she will snuggle with you and soak up as much of your love and adoration as she can.

Medical Note: When Danica was rescued, she tested positive for heartworm, but has since been successfully treated with immiticide in Texas in May 2019. She will require a standard heartworm test in November 2019 as follow-up. Danica must remain on monthly heartworm preventative for the rest of her life to ensure there is no recurrence of infection. Danica is one of the lucky ones as heartworm positive dogs are the first to lose their life in a high-kill shelter. Heartworm is so easily prevented and should not mean the end of an otherwise healthy dog’s life. We rescue as many as we can as they deserve to live their fullest and happiest life with humans that love and care for them.

All dogs available for adoption with Second Chance Animal Rescue Windsor-Essex come fully vaccinated, including lepto, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and heartworm tested (and are on heartworm/flea preventative while in our care). At adoption, adopters receive a 6-week free trial of pet insurance.
