A new program launched by Bike Windsor Essex will ensure those in the community who can’t afford a bike shop repair sill have a safe working bicycle.

Bike Windsor Essex has partnered with neighbourhood organizations including the Downtown Mission, the Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative, the Glengarry Initiative, the CanAm Indian Friendship Centre, Ford City Renewal, New Beginnings, the Windsor Youth Centre and others, to offer the program at no cost to those experiencing poverty.

The program is offered in an accessible safe space where those taking the program at no cost. Upon ‘graduating,’ those referred by a community organization will receive a $60 toolkit, at no cost, so they can continue to keep their bikes in safe riding condition.

More advanced courses will follow which will lead to opportunities for participants to be paid to teach classes themselves. A drop-in donation-only DIY space will be starting up in the coming weeks and the organization is looking for donations of bicycles that participants can fix up.

They have also recently launched a series of 3 basic bike maintenance classes, with the first one selling out.

Anyone interested in learning basic bike repair can register for the do-it-yourself classes. To learn more email [email protected], or check their website at
