Windsor area singer-songwriter Karen Morand was the winner of the 1st Annual Canada South Songwriting Contest that was held at the 3rd annual Kingsville Folk Music Festival.
She was picked from the five previously chosen finalists.
The finalists performed their songs for an enthusiastic audience at the Creekside stage on Saturday morning at the festival. By winning the contest Karen Morand earned prizes from D’Addario Canada, a $250 cash prize and opened the Main Stage on Saturday evening.
“I am so grateful to have won this contest, especially in my own backyard. I got serious about songwriting 10 years ago and it was the songwriting community in Essex County that created an atmosphere where we could take chances, encourage each other and be inspired.” Karen Morand went on to say, “We can all look at each others’ current songs and see the hard work pay off and admire how far we have all come. The best prize was the smiles and embraces of my fellow songwriters. This contest has already opened doors. Performing “Big Muddy” at Kingsville Folk Music Festival put me in front of a new audience and gave folks a reason to want to hear more.”
