Windsor City Council has voted to maintain the retail space on the ground floor of the Pelissier Street Parking Garage.
City administration had said that in their council report that three of the eight units are currently rented and the retail store fronts need major upgrades including waterproofing, repair work to the walls, ceilings and floors, new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units would need to be installed, as well as upgrades to electric and plumbing work, doors and windows at a cost of $1,852,000.
Council heard from two proponents with proposals to maintain the space as storefronts, who both said that the shopping and walk-ability are keys to redeveloping the downtown.
After a several hour debate, a motion was put on the floor to revert the space back to parking, but failed 6 to 4.
Councillor Rino Bortolin then put forward a motion to maintain commercial space which passed.
It will now come back to council in two weeks.
