The Greater Essex County District School Board is set to install rooftop solar panel projects at 26 school buildings over the next few months. Work on the first two jobs will begin this month.
The board currently has three existing solar photovoltaic systems installed at Dr. David Suzuki Public School, Sandwich Secondary School and Tecumseh Vista Academy.
The new projects will provide an additional 18,414 solar panels which should generate 6,390 megawatts of renewable energy each year.
The new rooftop systems will connect to the local electrical utility grid, although the harnessed energy is likely to return and be used by the school. There will be a dashboard provided at each location as a learning opportunity for staff and students to view the actual amount of solar power their school generates.
