Funding Announcement For Windsor-Essex County Health Unit

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care will provide have announced funding to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit of up to $1,233,096 in additional base funding and up to $172,500 in one-time funding for the 2015-16 funding year to support the provision of mandatory and related public health programs and services in this community. As these additional funds will be added to the Health Unit’s base, the funds can be used to grow much-needed capacity to the Health Unit.

The additional funding will be used to build or bolster the following areas of need through building capacity:

• Nutrition since multiple surveys reveal Windsor-Essex County residents are challenged to eat nutritionally balanced meals
• Physical activity since surveys also indicate Windsor-Essex County residents don’t engage in enough regular healthy activity
• Breast-feeding practices since Windsor-Essex County has low breast-feeding rates and the local capacity to change that is low
• Immunization rates through the compliance of the Immunization of School Pupils’ Act since our immunization rates aren’t as high as they should be
• A radon awareness strategy since naturally occurring radon is higher in our area that in many other areas of the province
