The City of Windsor is set to begin the process to change all the street lights to LED.
Monday evening, council approved converting the 22,000 standard street lights from high-pressure sodium bulbs to LED.
Total cost is estimated at $16.6 million. This includes the new fixtures, replacing about 200 old poles and about 9,000 older style brackets that will not fit the new fixtures.
The city can recoup $1.5 million of the cost from the retrofit program of the Independent Electricity System Operator.
Savings on electricity and maintenance cost over 15 years is estimated at $32 million.
The city will not be changing the 2,000 decorative-style street lamps in the city, found in business improvement areas and some neighborhoods as the cost to retrofit the fixtures will not result in much savings.
