Funding was announced Friday for Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare to assess the need for a child and youth advocacy centre in Windsor and the greater Essex County.
Child advocacy centres and child and youth advocacy centres help child and youth victims and their families navigate the criminal justice system. They provide a safe child- and youth-friendly environment where a coordinated team of professionals works to meet the specific needs of each person. The work of a multidisciplinary team can greatly reduce the emotional and mental harm to child and youth victims involved in the criminal justice system.
The funding of $50,874 will be provided in fiscal year 2015-16, and will be used to hire a professional consultant to consult extensively with various organizations in the community that deal with children and youth who have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.
The study will examine a variety of factors, including: ◦the current volume of cases involving child and youth victimization, the complexity and seriousness of those cases, the strengths and weaknesses of the current system, the need for improvements in communication and cooperation among professionals dealing with young victims, and whether a CYAC would be effective and sustainable in the community.
