The Friends of Turkey Creek are once again hosting the Turkey Creek Canoe Race and Cleanup this Saturday, June 27th, 2015.
This event is free but on-site registrations are required. Registration begins at noon, and the race starts at 1:00 pm sharp at Vince Marcotte Park in LaSalle (parking located at the corner of Monck Avenue and LaSalle Street).
If you have a canoe, or other non-motorized watercraft, you are asked to being it. Each participant must have a personal flotation device, and each watercraft must be equipped with a bailer and a throw bag with line & whistle. For those without, a limited number of canoes and associated gear will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Gloves and garbage bags will be available for all participants.
New this year an Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association trained Canoe Instructor on site to help those new to canoeing safely participate in this event. Anyone wanting this additional instruction should plan to arrive 11:45am.
Competitors will launch at Vince Marcotte Park in LaSalle. Participants will then paddle upstream or downstream, and will collect garbage as they paddle out. Paddlers have two hours to collect as much garbage as they can. At 3pm paddlers return to the starting point, at which point their ‘haul’ will be unloaded. Teams will be judged for the most garbage, the most unusual piece of garbage removed from the creek, and the best-decorated canoe. Prizes will be awarded accordingly. The winning team will also have their picture taken with the Turkey Creek Canoe Race trophy.
A free lunch will be available for all participants before the start of the race. In an effort to reduce the use of plastic water bottles, participants are encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottle.
