Victoria Day means fireworks, but the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society warns that to a lot of dogs and cats that means it’s one of the scariest weekends of the year.
They say that pets and fireworks don’t mix, and in their fear they may become lost when they bolt out of windows or open doors or slip their leash.
They offer a few suggestion to keep pets safe:
- Keep them indoors
- turning on a TV or radio to a familiar station to help mask the noise
- keep doors and windows closed
- ensuring that your pets are wearing collars with ID tags (microchips are great too)
- comforting or distracting them if they seem to be stressed
