One-hour free parking will remain at both the Goyeau and Pelissier downtown parking garages for now.
As part of Windsor’s 2015 budget, city administration had recommended that council eliminate the free hour to increase revenues by $187,425 per year.
The city says they need the extra money to cover the costs of maintaining the downtown garages.
Downtown Windsor BIA Chair Larry Horowitz asked council to defer the elimination of the first free hour for 18 months and the city and the BIA will would together in that tine to come up with a parking strategy.
Councillor Fred Francis put a motion on the table that would see it eliminated as of January 1st 2016. This will give all those involved time to work on a parking plan.
The motion passed with a vote of 6 to 4.
