A group of Grade 5 Prince Edward Students who call themselves the Super Helpers are learning the importance of giving back to the community.
“Although we call ourselves the Prince Edward Super Helpers, we like to think of ourselves as community super heroes,” Super Helper Amelia Mangat proudly says. “During the past two years, we have been able to raise approximately $1100 to give to Windsor and Essex County charities.”
Led by Teacher Coordinator Mathew Burkhart, the Super Helpers consist of students who organize a variety of school initiatives in order to donate to charities within the community. Each year, the students explore a large number of charitable organizations within Windsor and Essex County to donate to.
This year the Super Helpers selected the Windsor Youth Centre to focus their efforts. The group’s latest initiative was to organize and fund a meal for the Windsor Youth Centre which took place last month. Last year, the Super Helpers raised approximately $500 and donated the funds to the Windsor Regional Pediatrics Unit.
To raise money, the Super Helpers have implemented such projects as organizing a Prince Edward movie night and making and selling Loom bracelets. The group also was successful in obtaining a grant sponsored by the GECDSB and United Way’s Students Taking Action/ Think Global, Act Local program.
“One of the goals of educators is to instill the value of investing and giving back to others and the community. This project provides students with the opportunity to see the immediate impact they can have on others,” says Burkhart.
“I feel so lucky that we have the opportunity to help and give back to those that are less fortunate,” Mangat excitedly says. “We have so many things to be grateful for. Giving back to those that have less is just the right thing to do.”
