The 2014 edition of the Battle of the Hors d’Oeuvres raised more than $40,000 for youth mentoring programs, according to organizers.
The event, an annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters welcomed over 500 guests on May 22nd and served food and drink from 21 participating establishments.
“We are thrilled with this year’s turnout of guests and participants, and are grateful for the support we receive from our community,” said Hayley Morgan, executive director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex Foundation.
“Battle of the Hors d’Oeuvres has become an event like no other in the city. I like to describe it as an indoor food and drink festival – it is all about interaction!”
Funds raised through Battle of the Hors d’Oeuvres stay in Windsor and Essex County and help to support five youth mentoring programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex.
Organizers say relationships formed by volunteer mentors have proven to be instrumental in reducing bullying and other related negative behavior such as lack of interest in school, truancy, low self-esteem and drug and alcohol abuse.
“Each time we pair a child with a mentor or introduce children to our group programs, we start something incredible -– a life‐changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment,” says John Sutton, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex. “We believe that changing the course of these young lives can in turn change our community’s future.”
