Armando’s Pizza and the Parkside Grille were the big winners at the 2014 Battle of the Hors D’Oeuvres at Caesars Windsor, Thursday evening.
The evening, in support of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex Foundation, began with a mix and mingle session featuring food prepared and served by Assumption College Catholic High School students
The event included a silent auction to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters with many donated items such as West Jet vouchers, electronic items, a diamond pendant, and hotel stay at Caesars Windsor.
At 7pm, the main battle started with beverage tasting featuring local wineries, breweries and distillers. Restaurants and hospitality establishments set up stations for guests to sample unlimited hors d’oeuvres.
Restaurant contestants included Armando’s, The Bull & Barrel, Chanoso’s, The City Grill, Nero’s, Rino’s Kitchen, Taza, and Thai Palace.
In the Hospitality category, competing establishments included Caesars Windsor, Hummazing, Just Jeff’s, Parkside Grille, Thyme To-Go and The Windsor Club.
Guests were asked to vote for their favourite hors d’oeuvre by placing a glow stick wrist band into an establishment’s voting box, while local food critics determined their top picks.
Critics Pina Ciotoli of WindsorEats, Chef John Kukucka from Essex Golf & Country Club, and Oxley Estate Winery’s Chef Glenn van Blommestein selected Armando’s as “Best Restaurant” and Parkside Grille as “Best Hospitality”.
Once votes were tallied, it was revealed that Parkside Grille was the number one eatery of choice from Battle guests. Armando’s came in a close second.
