Dr. G. Allen Heimann, Medical Officer of Health for the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, announced his retirement effective December 31, 2014.
This transition represents the culmination of ongoing succession planning at the Health Unit. The hiring of Dr. Kirk in August, 2011 was the first step in the long-term transition of roles between Doctors Heimann and Kirk. This rare opportunity allowed for a seamless transfer of knowledge and expertise at the senior level, and speaks to a mature organization with a focus on long-term planning and strong leadership.
Dr. Kirk will retain the role of CEO and take on his new role as Medical Officer of Health upon Dr. Heimann’s retirement. Recruitment efforts will commence to fill the Associate Medical Officer of Health position that will become vacant with Dr. Kirk’s transition to Medical Officer of Health.
Dr. Heimann began his tenure at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit in 1989 and provided his expertise as Medical Officer of Health for over 25 years. Dr. Heimann will transition to part-time status on October 1, 2014 before concluding his duties with the Health Unit at the end of the year.
He plans to remain in the community, however, and focus on private practice for the immediate future.
