Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis took home the Sport Tourism Champion of the Year award at a the 8th Annual Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Prestige Awards on Wednesday in Edmonton.
The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of an elected or paid official who greatly impacted sport tourism in their community in 2013.
Contributing criteria in CSTA’s decision to recognize Mayor Francis included his impact on sports tourism in 2013 & within the last five years, his effect on sport within the charitable and not for profit community, and his demonstration of a strong commitment to the sport tourism industry and the ways in which that commitment positively impacted the lives of visitors, participants, constituents, residents in the community.
“This is really about where we have come from as a community, a community that recognizes diversification of our infrastructure and the importance of tourism as an economic driver for our region,” said Mayor Eddie Francis. “I am humbled to receive this award, and I thank Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island for nominating me, but mostly I am excited about the possibility it presents to help elevate our City as a sought-after sport tourism destination in the minds of the sport organizers from across the country.”
