It was a different kind of police chase on the 401 Tuesday night.
OPP say that just after 9pm, they were called to an accident on Highway 401 westbound near Communication Road, where a pickup truck lost control and the a trailer he was pulling with two horses inside became detached from the pickup truck. The pickup truck came to rest in the north ditch, while the trailer rolled over and came to rest on its roof in the centre median.
One of the horses remained safely in the trailer, while the other horse exited the trailer and began running westbound on the highway. While OPP officers were making their way to the horse that had fled from the scene, an unidentified motorist in a tractor-trailer assisted by traveling alongside the horse and keeping the horse contained as it was running along the highway. OPP officers arrived moments later and were able to get the horse stopped safely at the CSX overpass.
OPP officers stopped westbound traffic on the highway to allow for an OPP officer, who was on foot, to walk the horse to safety off the highway. The officer and the horse were escorted by an OPP police vehicle to the exit at Communication Road, then to the Provincial Offences Court on Communication Road.
OPP then contacted a local horse stable from Chatham, TJ Stables, who attended with a trailer to transport the horse. OPP officers then escorted them to the crash location to safely collect the other horse from the trailer.
Both horses sustained undetermined injuries as a result of the collision. They were treated and released by a local veterinarian shortly after they were brought to safety.
No injuries were reported on the occupants of the pickup truck.
