CUPE 1393 Criticizes UWindsor Over Talks Breaking Down

Talks between the University of Windsor and CUPE 1393 broke off early Saturday morning and the union has responded.

CUPE Local 1393 issued the following statement Saturday evening:

Local 1393 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1393) wishes to clarify statements made by University of Windsor Administration with respect to the recent breakdown of negotiations between the two parties.

Earlier today, Administration issued a bulletin to students in the public which read: “Talks between UWindsor and CUPE 1393 have broken off. The University remains ready to return to the bargaining table at any time.”

For the record, CUPE 1393 is providing the following timeline of the past 24 hours.

On the evening of September 27th, The University presented Local 1393 its latest bargaining proposal. At about midnight, Local 1393 presented the University a response through the Provincially-appointed mediator. The two parties agreed to adjourn for the evening and reconvene at 10am the following day.

Shortly after 8:30am this morning, Local 1393 was informed by the mediator that the employer would not return to the bargaining table, and that if Local 1393 wasn’t prepared to accept the University’s most recent offer, there was no point in continuing talks.

“If the University wants to pursue a scorched earth policy that jeopardizes the academic year for thousands of students and puts campus and community safety at risk, they owe it to everyone to at least be up front about how we got to this point,” said Dean Roy, President of CUPE 1393.

“Put simply, negotiations broke down because administration broke them. Administration wouldn’t be ready to return if they hadn’t left in the first place,” he added.

As they have been since the strike began on September 8th, Local 1393 remains available to bargain at a moment’s notice, without preconditions.

“Unfortunately, we have to update our members on what has transpired in the past 24 hours, so we are unable to meet Sunday. We will, however be available first thing Monday morning,” said Roy.
