The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society is hoping to find homes this weekend for dozens of dogs and cats with their first ever choose your own fee event, supported by Petsmart Charities of Canada.
Humane Society officials say that choose your own adoption fee events are frequently seen in the United States, but take place very infrequently in Canada. Historically, animal welfare organizations have worried that when adoption fees are reduced adopters may not feel the same attachment to their adopted animal. However, both practice and research in the US has proven this idea false.
This Saturday and Sunday only adopters of any animal nine months or older will be able to choose their own adoption fee. Normally adoption fees are $125-245 for pets over 9 months, but this weekend only adopters are free to choose the adoption fee for their new furry friend. All adoptions will still be subject to a $30 administration fee.
The Adoption Centre will be open 11am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday for adoptions. They are located at 1375 Provincial Road. As well adoptable animals may be viewed online 24 hours a day on their website.
