The City of Windsor is looking to clarify which types of garbage carts can be accepted by collection workers, after some recent confusion.
City officials say that while there are many different types of oversized garbage carts (greater than 125L or 30gal) offered on the market today, not all can be emptied by the collectors. Since oversized carts are emptied mechanically, they must be compatible with the lifting mechanisms on the collection vehicles. In order to be compatible, carts must have:
- A bar 18 inches from the ground
- An upper attachment 33 inches from the ground
- Both the bar and the upper attachment must be in good condition
In the past, collectors would occasionally empty non-compatible bins, but the city says that will no longer be the case. They say that due to needle stick injuries, cuts from sharp objects or other dangers, collectors are not allowed to reach into oversized pails or carts to remove bags.
The city has produced the above video for clarification.
