Leamington will be getting a new high school.
On Friday Helga Bailey, Chair of the GECDSB Board of Trustees was joined by School Council Chair Lily DiCiocco and Student Prime Minister Chris Adams to reveal that the Board has conditionally purchased approximately 20 acres in the town to build a new Leamington District Secondary School.
The land is located near the Sherk Centre athletic complex on Oak Street West. One of the outstanding conditions on the purchase is the approval of rezoning by the municipality. The process for that change will begin in the coming weeks.
The Board is planning to begin the design phase of the project as soon as possible with the naming of an architect. Following the approval of designs, the project will be tendered for construction. Work could begin by the Spring of 2014 with completion anticipated for the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
The new school will be built to accommodate 1,000 students. The cost of the project, not including the land purchase is $26,686,228.
