Premier Kathleen Wynne released the following statement on the death of Eugene Whelan:

“Last night, our province and our country lost Eugene Whelan, a wonderful man who spent much of his life in service to our country, and devoted himself to bettering the lives of others.

Eugene was known for his unique sense of style and his no-nonsense voice. He will be remembered for the way he ensured the hopes, ideas and ideals of Canada’s agricultural community were reflected in national policy, and how he opened up international markets to Canadian farmers.

He never forgot his roots, and he helped educate generations of Canadians of all backgrounds on the important role farmers play in our everyday lives. I know he will be missed dearly by a family that loved him very much, by his friends and neighbours in Essex, and by the countless people across the country who he served and inspired.”
