The Downtown Windsor BIA is looking to extend the season for sidewalk cafes to year-round. Currently, patios in the downtown core must pack up for the winter months which run between December 1st and March 1st.
A proposal set to go before Windsor City Council on January 21st recommends that current cafes be extended until February 28th 2013, and that the 2013 patio season run from March 1st 2013 until February 28th 2014 as a trial period for year long cafes.
The Downtown Windsor BIA proposes that any patios open in the winter months must be heated, with one heater for every ten people. They will be required to have seasonal decorations and decorative lighting, and will not be permitted to use any awnings in the winter mints due to snow loads on them. Operators of the patios will also be asked to sign a waver that will hold the city harmless of any damage caused to railings or other patio elements due to snow removal operations.
If business owners who operate patios in the summer months do not wish to continue them in the winter must remove their patio by November 30th of each year.
