It’s the end of the end for Windsor Raceway and the final component necessary to close the ages-old betting facility.

The Ontario Racing Commission has canceled Windsor Raceway’s ORC licence effective August 31st at 11:59pm meaning that the Raceway will cease all horse racing activity.

The Racing Commission had received a letter from Windsor Raceway on August 15th requesting to end its license. The Commission met with management of Windsor Raceway to discuss issues related to the request and set an end date.

Windsor Raceway has notified horsepeople under contract that a request was put in to cancel the Raceway’s license.

Ontario Racing Commission Executive Director John L. Blakney stated in a release that “There are certain financial terms and conditions that Windsor Raceway must meet before the licence is cancelled”.

The end of the Raceway’s long history became apparent in early Spring when the Ontario Lottery and Gaming gave notice that it would end its cost-sharing setup with Ontario’s horse race tracks and would be closing Windsor Raceway’s slots component.

Without slot revenue, Windsor Raceway announced that it wouldn’t be able to continue operations and set an end-of-summer closing date.
