The Windsor Police Arson Unit is investigating after a fire yesterday evening at the vacant al-Mahdi Islamic School (the former Sacred Heart) located at 385 Cameron in the city’s west end.

Windsor Fire and rescue officials report that upon entering the property, the entire second floor was engulfed in flames.  Subsequent investigation revealed that whoever was responsible for setting the fire had broken in through a second floor window which had  previously been boarded up.  Arson investigators located one ignition point on the second level and several ignition points on the main floor of the building.

Witnesses in the area tell police that they observed smoke coming from the second floor of the building at approximately 5:30 pm.  Damage to the building is estimated at $350,000.

There are no suspects at this time.

Anyone with any information regarding this arson or the identity of the suspects responsible are asked to call the Windsor Police Arson Unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4333 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS (8477).
