Windsor firefighters battled a massive structural blaze overnight on Windsor’s central-east side.
Around 1:12am, Windsor Fire & Rescue was called to the 1200 block of Drouillard for a report of a building on fire. Media relations officer Shawn Boutette described the situation as a “defensive” attack as flames shot into the sky.
The building burning was identified by Boutette as “Cadillac Jack’s”, a Ford City pub that had been closed for a year. The pub was most recently known as Whiski Jack’s.
Boutette indicated that no hazardous chemicals were involved in the blaze, but that residents downwind from the blaze should close windows and avoid breathing smokey air.
Two Windsor firefighters were taken to hospital after suffering heat exhaustion and both face non-life-threatening injuries.
Command crews at the scene evacuated all firefighters from the building at approximately 2:10am as the blaze grew out of control. There were unconfirmed reports that for a period of time, two firefighters had gone missing, or had broken radio contact.
Crews extinguished the fire around 5am and at least one truck remains on scene this morning.
