Vincent Massey Secondary School

Students from Vincent Massey Secondary School know where they’re going and how to get there. Mustangs claimed 9 of the top prizes in the 42nd annual Ontario Schools Map-Making Competition, the oldest event of its kind in the world.  The challenge, issued to students ages 12-18 at 4926 Ontario schools is to create static digital or mostly hand-drawn maps. The Massey students chose topics related to English literature and language and used cartography and visual literacy skills to tell stories with their maps.  Winners were for Best Map in Ontario : Elaine Shen.  For Mostly Hand-drawn Maps the winners were in 1st Place,  Michele Zhang(Grade 11-12 Category) 2nd Place Sharon Chan, 3rd Place Erica Li,  4th Place Yining Ni,  5th Place Anne Rusling.  Winners for Mostly Hand-drawn Maps 2nd Place Arianne Rodriguez 3rd Place David Guttmann,  4th Place  Weiyi  Dai.   Elaine Shen and Michele Zhang received Netbook computers from the competition sponsor Rogers Communication. Kingsville District High School

Rebecca Penner’s poem, titled Georgian Bay, has won first prize among Grade 10 students in the 2010-11 National Student Poetry Contest, held annually by Polar Expressions Publishing. Her composition will be included in the poetry anthology, Cities of Gold, which includes the top entries from across Canada. Rebecca also wins a $140.00 prize and a matching amount for her school. Journey to Holiness Award Winners for 2010-2011

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is proud to announce the following awards presented to our students who reflect our Catholic Character Development Initiative – “Our Journey to Holiness.”  The overall focus of Catholic Character Development is in the words of the Prophet Micah:  “What does God ask of you but to do justice, and to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God?”  Five faith awards are presented each year to elementary and secondary students with a focus on a Catholic theme and virtue from Junior Kindergarten to Grade Twelve.

Sabrina Marchi, St. Christopher – Gr. 8

Integrity and Discipleship (Grades 9-10)
Quinn Conlon, Assumption College High School – Gr. 10

Humility and Justice (Grades 11-12)
Tyler Girard, Holy Names Secondary – Gr. 11

The will be presented during the next Board meeting, Tuesday, June 14th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.
