If you’ve driven down Huron Church lately, you may have noticed long lines of black fences cropping up over the lands where the new border highway will be built.
But these fences aren’t just to contain the construction area, they are temporary barriers designed to protect the “climbing” Eastern Foxsnake.
Constructed out of smooth fabric, the snake barriers are being placed at strategic location to keep snakes away from future construction areas.
The barriers are necessary at the site under the Endangered Species Act, and a requirement of a permit issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The black fences are expected to remain at the site until construction finishes in the late 2010s and the new border road is built.
