The Town of Leamington released this statement regarding the closure of the Heinz Plant.

It is with great disappointment that we learn of the closure of the Heinz Plant in Leamington. While much detail remains to be known, we understand that it is Heinz’ intention to cease operations as of June 2014. This is a day we hoped would never come.

As of this moment, our team and our Economic Development Corporation have reached out to the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities to launch their support teams for the employees.

We have contacted all levels of government including the Provincial Ministries of Rural Affairs, Agriculture, Finance, Economic Development Trade and Education, Federal and Provincial Members of Parliament, the Premier’s office and FedDev to make them aware of today’s announcement by Heinz, as well as put them on notice of what help they can be in our future.

On behalf of Council, we commit to do everything we can to lessen the impact of this closure and gather whatever resources are available to assist the employees of Heinz, as well as affected suppliers as we move forward.

Our thoughts are with the Heinz employees right now and we will do whatever we can to help them through this difficult time. We want to remain hopeful about the future of this facility as a staple of business activity for Leamington and our farming community.
