After years of negotiations with Chinese bus manufacturer BYD, the plan for Windsor to purchase buses from the company has fallen through.
Mayor Eddie Francis says Transit Windsor will not be purchasing several all-electric buses from BYD due to the fact that BYD did “not get Canadian approvals”.
The Mayor and BYD were originally in talks to locate a manufacturing facility in Windsor. Francis says BYD will not be locating an assembly plant here afterall.
Francis explained that in Windsor’s quest to be the “first Canadian city to green its transit fleet”, they’ve entered negotiations with Greenville South Carolina based company Proterra.
More details about a deal for new buses from Proterra are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
